Hookworms, Hookworms Suck Blood, Hookworms Drinks Blood, Hookworms Drains Blood
Very shocking incident, Hookworms Drained-Drank 22 Liters Blood From 14 Years Boy’s Body in two years. The boy who hails from Haldwani in Uttarakhand was suffering from major weight loss and stunted growth. He had low haemoglobin of 5.86, there was no associated pain in the abdomen, fever, and diarrhoea. Since 2 years this young boy is suffering with acute anaemia and had to be given blood transfusion over the two years of his medication, Many tests conducted but left doctors clueless about his blood loss.
Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi conducted a capsule endoscopy (Capsule endoscopy is a procedure which uses a tiny wireless camera to take pictures of a person’s digestive tract. A capsule endoscopy camera sits inside a vitamin-sized capsule that the patient swallows.) and The first half of the intestines appeared normal. But the second half had turned blood red. A deeper examination showed hookworms found buried in the mucosa of the small bowel, actively sucking blood. The blood could be seen in the cavity of the hookworms, giving them a red colour. White coloured hookworms, which had not yet sucked blood, were seen lying quietly in the small bowel. hookworms which were present in boys body over the last two years, silently sucked at least 22 litres of blood from the boy.
Dr Anil Arora, chairperson of the department of gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital(SGRH) as saying, “A young boy of 14 years was referred to SGRH a few months ago with two episodes of the passage of blood in stools. The child was suffering from iron deficiency anaemia for the last two years. He had received 50 units (22 litres) of blood transfusions and this is really an unusual case. His diagnosis could not be established even after repeated tests. His haemoglobin was low at 5.86.”
